Congress approved the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2024, allocating an impressive 5.2% pay increase to military members.

There’s no doubt that the cost of living has significantly increased throughout 2023. More so now than ever before, purchasing a home is a financially daunting task. Moreover, the cost of rent is continuously skyrocketing. That 5.2% raise should provide some relief with the costs of living, gas, groceries, and other daily expenses increasing.

This decision is set to commence on January 1, 2024. The official changes will be reflected in the first paychecks of the year, which normally go out in mid-January. Individual service member pay will build on their previous year’s salary, based on their military rank and years of experience.

Officers serving in combat zones receive special pay privileges. Those ranking 0-1 and above can eliminate portions of their pay from taxes due to the dangerous nature of their role. You can calculate your full paycheck by adding your “hostile fire or imminent danger” pay to your basic pay rate.

When Are the Military Pay Dates?

Fortunately, the military follows a consistent pay schedule from year to year. Service members across all branches can look forward to their new pay rate going into effect on January 1, 2024. The 5.2% pay increase will be reflected in the first paycheck of the year.

Normally, military paychecks are issued on the 1st and 15th of each month. However, January 15, 2024, falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, so military members may receive payment a day early this upcoming year!
